Cop killer gets 115 years to life in shocking Queens case

Gunman who killed NYPD detective sentenced to 115 years to life

Queens, NY — A man convicted in the fatal shooting of an NYPD officer during a street encounter in Far Rockaway has been sentenced to 115 years to life in prison, closing a case that stemmed from a 2024 confrontation that left one officer dead and another narrowly surviving.

Guy Rivera, 36, of Long Island City, received the sentence after being found guilty of aggravated manslaughter in the first degree and attempted murder in the first degree. The charges stem from the March 25, 2024 shooting of NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller and the attempted killing of Sergeant Sasha Rosen.

According to prosecutors, the incident unfolded when officers approached a parked vehicle after observing what appeared to be a weapon. Rivera, seated in the passenger seat, ignored repeated commands to exit the vehicle before pulling a .380-caliber handgun and firing, striking Diller in the abdomen.

After the shooting, Rivera allegedly pointed the weapon at Sergeant Rosen and attempted to fire again, but the gun malfunctioned. Officers at the scene returned fire, and Rivera was taken into custody.

Detective Diller was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries. He was posthumously promoted following his death.

Rivera was also convicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The court imposed consecutive sentences totaling 115 years to life, ensuring he will remain incarcerated for the rest of his life if upheld.

The case was prosecuted by the Queens District Attorney’s Office following an investigation that included forensic evidence and witness testimony.
