Crashes and closures slow Pennsylvania’s Friday morning commute

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Friday’s morning drive across Pennsylvania brought a mix of icy conditions, roadwork, and multiple crashes stretching from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, creating a challenging start to the day for motorists statewide.

As of 8:30 a.m., traffic was completely stopped on I-76 westbound at the Allegheny Tunnel in Somerset County for ice removal. Crews warned of periodic 15-minute stoppages and extended delays through the area. Farther east, I-80 eastbound in Luzerne County remained partially restricted after a crash near Exit 273 in White Haven.

In Philadelphia, both directions of U.S. 1 were closed following overnight crashes between Broad Street and Ridge Avenue, with cleanup and investigation continuing through the morning rush. Nearby, I-95 southbound at Girard Avenue and I-676 westbound near the Ben Franklin Parkway both experienced earlier vehicle incidents that have since cleared.

Chester County saw significant slowdowns on U.S. 202 southbound between Frazer and Downingtown due to an early crash, while moving roadwork on PA 896 caused disruptions between Limestone and Homeville roads. In York County, two separate incidents on U.S. 30—one near Schoolhouse Road and another at Eden Road—caused heavy delays in both directions.

Elsewhere, active lane closures and maintenance continued to impact travel. In Carbon County, I-476 southbound had its right lane closed for road work, while in Franklin County, utility repairs shut down PA 75 between Shimpstown Road and Constitution Avenue in Fort Loudon.

Despite several incidents being cleared by midmorning, PennDOT advised motorists to expect lingering congestion and to use caution as crews continued responding to multiple active work zones and icy spots statewide.
