NEW YORK, N.Y. – Commuters across New York faced a sluggish and hazardous Friday morning drive as icy conditions, crashes, and disabled vehicles snarled traffic from Albany to Staten Island. A mix of lane closures, cleanup work, and ice removal operations added to the congestion across major highways and parkways.
In the Hudson Valley, an overturned vehicle on the Saw Mill River Parkway southbound at Palmer Road in Yonkers blocked two of three lanes, while a crash with injuries further east on the Cross County Parkway near Kimball Avenue shut down the left lane. Both incidents caused significant backups through Westchester County during the morning rush.
Downstate, New York City’s boroughs saw scattered delays. On the Long Island Expressway (I-495), a crash near Van Wyck Expressway blocked two right lanes eastbound, while a separate disabled vehicle westbound near 48th Street added to delays approaching the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. At JFK Airport, Terminal 4’s Blue Parking lot reached full capacity by 8 a.m., creating gridlock near the terminal entrances.
In Brooklyn and the Bronx, transportation crews scheduled icicle removal between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on I-278 near Adams Street and on I-95 between Nelson Avenue and I-678, with alternating lane closures expected. Staten Island traffic was also expected to slow midday due to lane restrictions on NY 440 for cleanup after a crash between Glen Street and Englewood Avenue.
Upstate, the icy weather impacted travel along I-90 in multiple regions. In Albany, a disabled vehicle westbound before Exit 4 closed the right shoulder. Near Syracuse, two separate crashes on the New York State Thruway eastbound and westbound around Liverpool caused morning slowdowns, with another incident reported near the State Fair exit.
Drivers were advised to allow extra travel time and watch for changing road conditions as crews continued working on ice removal, debris cleanup, and vehicle recovery throughout the morning.
