Crashes and long delays clog I-95, I-84 and Merritt Parkway in Connecticut Monday morning

HARTFORD, CT – Connecticut commuters faced a rough start to the week as multiple crashes and miles of congestion slowed traffic on key highways across the state Monday morning.

A two-vehicle crash on Route 8 southbound between Exits 1C and 1B shut down the left lane just after 8 a.m. Meanwhile, Route 15 southbound was closed overnight between Exits 27 and 21 following a pedestrian crash reported around 4:20 a.m. The Merritt Parkway also saw heavy congestion southbound, with delays stretching 7.1 miles between Exits 17C and 10 as of 7:56 a.m.

On I-95, southbound traffic backed up nearly 20 miles between Exits 32 and 13, in addition to separate slowdowns of 2.9 miles between Exits 47 and 43 and 8.6 miles between Exits 10 and 3.

I-84 also bore the brunt of the rush. Eastbound traffic stacked up 2.3 miles between Exits 26 and 27 and another 2.3 miles between Exits 44 and 48. Westbound delays included 1.8 miles between Exits 7 and 6 and 3.4 miles between Exits 10 and 9.

Adding to the strain, road work on I-384 eastbound before Exit 3 shut down the right and center lanes. The project, reported at 8:05 a.m., is expected to continue through 3:30 p.m.

Commuters were urged to plan for extra travel time as backups lingered through the peak rush.

Key Points

  • Route 8 southbound crash closed a lane between Exits 1C and 1B around 8 a.m.
  • Route 15 southbound fully shut down earlier due to a pedestrian crash.
  • Longest backup: nearly 20 miles on I-95 southbound between Exits 32 and 13.

Connecticut’s highways delivered a jam-packed Monday commute.
