Delays hit George Washington Bridge and key New Jersey routes Thursday morning

NEWARK, N.J. — Commuters across New Jersey faced multiple delays and construction slowdowns Thursday morning, with traffic building at major crossings and along key corridors including the George Washington Bridge, Garden State Parkway, and several interstates.

As of 8:38 a.m., traffic was delayed on the lower level eastbound of the George Washington Bridge on the New Jersey side in Fort Lee. The travel time along I-95 from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge reached 15 minutes.

Volume-related slowdowns were also reported along the Garden State Parkway. At 7:51 a.m., delays formed on the southbound side exiting at Exit 130B-A for US 1 in Woodbridge Township.

On I-280 westbound, traffic was moving slowly as of 7:42 a.m., from east of the Stickel Drawbridge in Harrison to east of Exit 15 for NJ 21 in Newark. Although all lanes remained open, congestion continued to affect drive times.

NJ 21 experienced several backup points northbound Thursday morning. By 7:34 a.m., delays were present from north of Exit 13 at Ackerman Avenue to just west of the Garden State Parkway in Clifton. Additional congestion was noted as early as 7:22 a.m. from Miller Street to Clay Street and Mount Pleasant Avenue in Newark.

Southbound delays were also seen on US 1&9/Tonnelle Avenue from south of NJ 495/NJ 3 in North Bergen Township to just past Carlton Avenue in Jersey City, with all lanes open as of 7:25 a.m.

Construction slows traffic on turnpike and parkway corridors

Multiple construction zones also contributed to travel disruptions. As of 8:32 a.m., a ramp closure was in effect on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway southbound at Interchange 10 (NJ 440/I-287) in Edison Township due to roadwork.

On the Garden State Parkway, a right lane closure was reported on the inner roadway southbound between Exit 124 and the Jon Bon Jovi Service Area in Sayreville as of 8:02 a.m.

The Atlantic City Expressway faced westbound construction between Hamilton Township and Hammonton, with a left lane and shoulder closed until 2:30 p.m. Drivers were advised to move over for highway workers.

Elsewhere, construction on US 202 southbound near CR 613/Main Street in Readington Township had the right shoulder closed until 3:00 p.m. Similar restrictions were in place along US 22 in Scotch Plains and US 46 in both directions through Mountain Lakes and Denville Township.

On the George Washington Bridge lower level eastbound, construction continued between the New Jersey and New York sides, with a right lane closure until 3:30 p.m., further affecting bridge travel conditions.
