WASHINGTON, DC – Antwan Mitchell, a 19-year-old resident of Washington D.C., has entered a guilty plea to a charge of carjacking related to an incident that occurred in February 2024. The plea was made before the Honorable Jason Park in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, with sentencing scheduled for August 5, 2024.
The case, arising from a carjacking on February 6, 2024, in the 200 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE, was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sabena Auyeung. During the plea hearing, Mitchell admitted his involvement along with two unidentified co-conspirators in the armed carjacking of a rideshare driver.
According to U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela A. Smith, the victim was surrounded and threatened at rifle-point shortly after dropping off passengers.
After commandeering the victim’s SUV, police quickly located the stolen vehicle and a second vehicle used in the crime. Mitchell was apprehended following a pursuit when he attempted to flee. A firearm was recovered from the vehicle, though Mitchell’s accomplices remain at large.
