Dog stabbed in domestic dispute remains in shelter amid ongoing court case

Animal cruelty investigation leaves injured dog in legal limbo at Monmouth County SPCA.

Eatontown, NJ – A dog recovering from a stab wound sustained during a domestic dispute is being held at the Monmouth County SPCA while a related animal cruelty case proceeds through the courts, preventing the animal from being adopted.

The dog, named Trouble, was taken into custody by law enforcement and transferred to the shelter for emergency care after the incident. According to the SPCA, the animal required immediate medical treatment and remains under its supervision as the legal case involving former owners is contested.

Legal process delays adoption

Because the case is still pending, Trouble cannot be placed in a permanent home. Shelter officials say animals involved in active cruelty cases are often required to remain in protective custody until legal proceedings are resolved.

“He needed immediate medical care and safety – and we were ready to provide both. What we weren’t prepared for was the waiting,” the organization said in a public statement.

Shelter calls attention to broader issue

The Monmouth County SPCA said staff are providing ongoing medical treatment, daily care, and behavioral support, but noted that extended shelter stays can be stressful for animals accustomed to home environments.

“Dogs like Trouble thrive in homes, not kennels,” the organization stated, adding that prolonged legal timelines can leave animals “in limbo for long periods of time.”

The group said it is advocating for legislative changes aimed at speeding up animal cruelty cases, which could allow animals to transition more quickly into permanent homes once safety concerns are addressed.

The SPCA is also seeking donations to help cover the cost of Trouble’s medical care, boarding, and daily needs while the case remains unresolved.
