Downtown Boston erupts in chaos as violent protest leaves officers injured and dozens arrested

BOSTON, MA – A rally that began peacefully at the Boston Common Tuesday evening spiraled into violence, leading to multiple arrests and injuries to several police officers after clashes broke out in the heart of downtown.

The disturbance started shortly before 6:45 p.m. when protesters blocked Tremont Street near Winter Street, halting traffic and obstructing emergency vehicles.

When officers attempted to clear the roadway, members of the crowd resisted, surrounding cruisers, kicking doors, and igniting smoke devices and flares.

Officers assaulted amid escalating confrontation

Police said several officers were struck during the chaos, including one who suffered facial injuries. Four officers were later transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening conditions. No protesters required medical treatment at the scene.

As tensions escalated, additional units from the Citywide Bicycle Unit and Special Operations were deployed to disperse the group and restore order. Officers reported that body-worn cameras, radios, and bicycles were damaged in the confrontation.

Numerous arrests made at the scene

Police arrested more than a dozen individuals accused of unlawful assembly, violent resistance, and interference with emergency response. Those charged included:
– Osama Khatib, 26, of Watertown
– Roder Atwood, 21, of Somerville
– Atalanta Carrig-Braun, 20, of Boston
– Haley MacIntyre, 24, of Dorchester
– Madeline Weikel, 27, of Watertown
– Jacob Pettigrew, 22, of Malden
– Amun Prophet, 25, of Allston
– Laith Hintzman, 19, of Boston
– Benjamin Choucroun, 20, of Medford
– Owen Woodcock, 26, of Boston
– Prahlad Iyengar, 25, of Boston
– Styx Hatch, 19, of Boston
– Gabrielle Smith, 28, of Cambridge

All are expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on charges ranging from disorderly conduct to assault and battery on a police officer.

Investigation remains active

The Boston Police Department said the investigation into the protest remains ongoing. Detectives from District A-1 are reviewing footage and witness statements to identify additional suspects.

Officials urged anyone with information about the disturbance to contact District A-1 Detectives at (617) 343-4571 or call 911 for immediate concerns.

The violent demonstration marked one of the largest public order responses in downtown Boston this fall.

Police said calm was restored shortly before 9 p.m., but the investigation continues into what sparked the confrontation.
