Everything You Need to Know About “Sister”, Disney’s Transgendered Star Wars Clone Trooper

Sister is a groundbreaking character in the Star Wars universe, introduced as a trans female clone trooper. She first appeared in Queen’s Hope, a young-adult novel by E.K. Johnston, released in 2022. Sister’s character adds depth to the portrayal of clones in the franchise, as she navigates her identity within the rigid structure of the Grand Army of the Republic. Like other clones, she was created from Jango Fett’s genetic template but identified as female, which her fellow troopers supported by giving her the name “Sister” to affirm her gender identity.

Sister participated in key battles during the Clone Wars, serving under Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padawan Anakin Skywalker in the 7th Sky Corps. Her first significant appearance was in a battle on a rocky planet in 22 BBY. After the combat, she paid tribute to her fallen brothers by arranging their helmets under a tree. This act of respect highlighted her connection with her fellow clones despite their differences. Anakin Skywalker even discussed the Jedi’s belief in transcending rigid concepts, likening it to Sister’s journey of transcending gender norms among clones.

Later that year, Sister was involved in an aid mission to the mining planet Langston with the 302nd Battalion. Her service and courage were commemorated in Clone Captain Rex’s book, The Secrets of the Clone Troopers, published post-war. Rex recounted Sister’s initial concerns about being accepted as her authentic self but praised the support she received from her brothers and Jedi commanders.

Visually, Sister’s design includes elements that signify her identity. She is depicted in Phase II clone trooper armor featuring blue and pink stripes, representing the colors of the transgender flag. Her dark hair, styled in braids, also incorporates pink accents, further expressing her individuality. These details were first introduced through commissioned artwork by Uzuri Art, which established her look in the Star Wars canon.

Sister’s story, though a relatively minor part of the broader Star Wars lore, marks an important step toward inclusivity within the franchise. Her character not only broadens the narrative of the Clone Wars but also provides representation for transgender fans in the galaxy far, far away.
