Extreme heat may slow nj transit trains as new fare increase takes effect

Passengers should expect possible rush-hour delays through Saturday as extreme temperatures force slower train operations, while a new 3% fare increase also took effect Wednesday.

Newark, NJ – NJ Transit warned riders Wednesday that extreme heat could cause trains to operate at reduced speeds through Saturday, increasing the likelihood of delays during the busy morning and evening commutes.

The agency said the precaution is necessary because high temperatures can affect railroad infrastructure, requiring trains to slow down to help ensure safe operations. Riders are encouraged to monitor service updates at the agency’s website, through the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App, or by following their rail line’s official account on X.

Heat precautions could impact service

“Due to the extreme temperatures forecasted today through Saturday, trains may need to operate at reduced speeds, which could result in delays,” NJ Transit said in a service advisory posted Wednesday.

The advisory comes as much of New Jersey experiences dangerously hot weather, with elevated temperatures capable of affecting tracks and other rail equipment.

Officials advised commuters to allow extra travel time, particularly during peak rush-hour periods, as service adjustments may be necessary throughout the heat wave.

Fare increase also begins Wednesday

The service advisory coincides with a new 3% systemwide fare increase that took effect Wednesday across NJ Transit trains, buses, and light rail services.

The latest adjustment marks the second consecutive annual 3% increase following a similar hike that began on July 1 last year. It also follows the agency’s 15% systemwide fare increase implemented on July 1, 2024, as part of its long-term financial plan.
