Joppatowne woman wins $500K Powerball Double Play prize carrying on late father’s lottery tradition
Joppatowne, MD – A Harford County woman has claimed a $500,000 Powerball Double Play prize, saying the win continues a family tradition started by her late father, who shared her love of playing the lottery.
The winner, who chose the alias “Brown Eyed Girl,” matched the first five numbers in the August 25 Double Play drawing to secure the half-million-dollar prize. She purchased her ticket at Bernie’s Liquors, located at 1414 Martin Boulevard in Middle River. The store will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the ticket.
“This is such a blessing, though I still find it difficult to believe it really happened,” she told lottery officials. “I cried when I realized that I’d won.”
She credited her late father for inspiring her to keep playing, noting that he enjoyed lottery games not just for the wins but for the excitement of the draw. “He had so much fun playing that he’d have continued even without the wins,” she said.
The win came from the $1 Double Play add-on, which gives players an extra chance at prizes up to $10 million. Her ticket matched all five black balls but not the red Powerball number.
The jackpot for the main Powerball game has continued to grow, with an estimated $850 million annuity value and a cash option of $383.7 million for the August 27 drawing.
