New York, NY — Two firefighters were injured while battling a three-alarm fire that tore through a vacant building early Sunday morning in Manhattan, prompting a large FDNY response and an exterior firefight due to structural concerns.
The New York City Fire Department confirmed that 192 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the blaze at 208 7th Avenue, where flames had spread across multiple floors by the time crews arrived.
Heavy fire conditions force exterior operations
Deputy Chief Anthony Arpaia said units reached the scene in just over three minutes but encountered significant fire conditions throughout the structure, including the upper levels.
“Upon arrival, units encountered fire throughout multiple floors of a vacant building, including the upper levels,” Arpaia said. “Members operated from tower ladders to knock down the fire and conduct searches from the exterior due to unsafe interior conditions.”
Because of structural instability following the fire, firefighters were unable to safely enter the building. Instead, crews conducted searches using tower ladder buckets to confirm that no occupants were inside.
Officials said the building was vacant at the time of the fire, and no civilian injuries were reported.
Fire contained, nearby buildings protected
Firefighters positioned apparatus at multiple points around the structure to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings in the densely built area of Manhattan.
The fire was eventually brought under control, though units remained at the scene to ensure all remaining hot spots were fully extinguished.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries during operations. The extent of those injuries was not immediately detailed, but both were reported to be non-life-threatening.
