Fiery crash shuts down Sprain Brook Parkway, traffic grinds to halt

GREENBURGH, NY – A fiery crash early Saturday morning disrupted traffic on the Sprain Brook State Parkway after a vehicle caught fire north of Jackson Avenue, blocking two of the three northbound lanes. The incident was first reported around 6:41 a.m. at mile marker 5.6, according to the state’s computer-aided dispatch system.

Officials said the crash caused extensive damage and led to a vehicle fire that engulfed one vehicle, blocking part of the roadway, prompting an immediate emergency response. Firefighters arrived within minutes and worked to extinguish the flames while police diverted vehicles into the single open lane.

Traffic came to a near standstill as responders secured the area and assessed the wreckage. No serious injuries were reported at the scene, though investigators remained on-site to determine the cause of the crash and assess the extent of the damage.

Cleanup crews began clearing debris shortly after 7 a.m., but authorities warned of lingering delays as both the right and center lanes remained closed during the operation. Commuters heading northbound through Greenburgh were urged to use alternate routes until the scene was fully reopened.

By sunrise, heavy congestion stretched south of Jackson Avenue, with emergency crews still working at the scene.
