JARRETTSVILLE, Md. — A fire caused an estimated $55,000 in damage to a two-story single-family home on Shepherd Court in Harford County on Thursday afternoon. No injuries were reported in the incident.
The fire, which originated on the rear porch, was discovered by the homeowner and a neighbor shortly after 3:45 p.m., officials said. Investigators determined the cause to be accidental, stemming from improperly discarded fireplace ashes.
The Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company responded to the blaze with 30 firefighters, bringing it under control within five minutes of arrival. Their swift action prevented the fire from spreading to the roof and the rest of the house, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
The home was equipped with smoke alarms, but they did not activate because the fire began outside the structure. No sprinkler system was installed in the residence.
The homeowner, who is making her own arrangements following the incident, was credited with alerting authorities quickly. Fire officials emphasized the importance of safe ash disposal, advising residents to store ashes in tightly covered metal containers kept outdoors and at least 10 feet from any buildings.
Investigators urged the public to handle ashes with care to prevent similar fires, noting that ashes can retain heat long after being discarded.
