GARRETT COUNTY, Md. — A two-alarm fire broke out Wednesday evening at Friends Stockyard in Garrett County, prompting an extensive emergency response and efforts to contain loose cattle in freezing conditions.

The fire was reported around 5:45 p.m. at the stockyard located in the 300 block of Stockyard Road. The Accident Volunteer Fire Department, along with multiple surrounding departments, responded to the scene.

Due to the scale of the fire, firefighters requested assistance from law enforcement and local cowboys to help wrangle cattle that escaped during the blaze.

Officials described the situation as an “extended operation” as responders worked to control the fire and secure the animals. Temperatures at the scene were reported at 10 degrees, complicating firefighting and rescue efforts.

Deputy State Fire Marshals are actively investigating the cause of the fire.

No injuries have been reported, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
