Ford City man accused of stealing $13K in rare trading cards from New Kensington shop
NEW KENSINGTON, PA – A man from Ford City is facing charges after allegedly stealing more than $13,000 worth of high-value trading cards during a string of thefts at a New Kensington collectibles store, police said.
New Kensington police were called to the Feisty Goblin on Fifth Avenue in late November after store owners reported ongoing losses they believed were tied to a frequent customer. Surveillance footage showed the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Jeffrey Spang, entering the store on multiple occasions and concealing merchandise in a bag or waiting for moments when staff were distracted before walking out with the items.
According to police, Spang stole merchandise from the store on 12 separate occasions starting in early November. The total estimated loss reported by the store owners exceeds $13,118.
Investigators were able to identify Spang and later located his vehicle parked outside the Feisty Goblin. Officers obtained a search warrant and, during a search of the vehicle, discovered additional packs of valuable trading cards believed to have been stolen.
Police say some of the cards recovered may be rare collectibles taken from other stores in the greater Pittsburgh area, and the investigation into possible related thefts is ongoing.
Spang has been charged with retail theft and is expected to appear in court later this month. Anyone with information about the stolen cards is encouraged to contact the New Kensington Police Department and ask for Detective Huth.
