Four arrested after barricade standoff at Navy Yard apartment

December 14, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC — Four suspects were arrested early Thursday following a barricade situation at a Navy Yard apartment complex that police say involved armed burglary and kidnapping.

The incident began at approximately 12:55 a.m. when officers from the First District responded to a burglary report at an apartment in the 1100 block of First Street, Southeast. A victim reported that multiple suspects entered their apartment demanding property, only to realize they had entered the wrong unit and leave. The suspects then forced their way into a neighboring apartment, where they allegedly held the occupant against his will.

Officers arrived to find the suspects barricaded inside the second apartment. The Emergency Response Team was called, and after several hours, police obtained a DC Superior Court search warrant. The apartment door was forcibly opened, and all four suspects were taken into custody without incident.

The suspects, identified as 28-year-old Samir Michael of Silver Spring, Maryland; 18-year-old Keshaun Seltzer of Southeast, DC; a 16-year-old juvenile male from Northeast, DC; and a 17-year-old juvenile male from Southeast, DC, were charged with first-degree burglary while armed and kidnapping.

Seven firearms and significant quantities of illegal drugs were recovered from the apartment. The apartment’s occupant, 31-year-old Amenuel Shewaferahu of Southeast, DC, was also arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute while armed and possession of an unregistered firearm.
