PARKVILLE, Md. — A quick trip to buy fruit turned into a $1 million payday for a Baltimore man who purchased a winning Powerball ticket earlier this month, Maryland Lottery officials said Monday.

The man visited the Safeway store at 8858 Waltham Woods Road in Parkville on June 2. After finishing his shopping, he initially passed on buying lottery tickets but changed his mind after overhearing someone mention Powerball near the exit. He returned to the kiosk and purchased five Cash4Life tickets, one Mega Millions ticket, and two Powerball tickets.

Days later, while at a friend’s house, he learned that a winning Powerball ticket had been sold at that same Safeway location. He went home to check his tickets and discovered he had matched all five white balls on one of his Powerball tickets, making him a $1 million second-tier prize winner.

He shared the news with his mother after confirming the win. According to officials, he enjoys exercising and playing basketball in his spare time.

Safeway earns retailer bonus for selling winning ticket

The Safeway store where the ticket was purchased will receive a $2,500 retailer bonus. This marks the second $1 million second-tier Powerball win claimed in Maryland this year. The other was claimed on June 11 by a Baltimore County grandfather who bought his ticket in Catonsville.
