Limited-edition street signs introduce new slogan inspired by Barbra Streisand film
New York, NY – Travelers entering Manhattan are now being greeted with a new message as city officials unveil redesigned “Welcome to Manhattan” signs featuring the phrase “Hello, gorgeous.” The updated signage is part of a limited release announced this week by the New York City Department of Transportation.
The signs, which include the names of city officials and the new tagline, are inspired by the iconic line from Barbra Streisand’s 1968 film Funny Girl. Officials say the slogan was designated by Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal as a cultural nod to the borough’s identity.
Limited batch released as part of monthly sign program
The city produced 100 of the new signs for public sale, priced at $100 each through the official CityStore. The handmade signs are created at the NYC DOT Sign Shop in Queens, which produces tens of thousands of street and traffic signs annually.
“It’s hard to top the vibrancy of Manhattan—so it’s only fitting that the new Welcome to Manhattan sign features the tagline ‘Hello, gorgeous,’” said NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn. “These authentic, hand-made signs are a true piece of New York City history— but don’t wait. They’ll sell out in a New York minute.”
