Hendersonville, NC – Following the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the Henderson County Government has issued crucial safety reminders to residents impacted by the storm. These guidelines are offered by Edneyville Fire & Rescue in an effort to ensure the wellbeing of the community during the post-storm recovery process.
One of the primary safety tips includes unplugging electrical devices and switching off main breakers in homes that have experienced flooding or storm-related damage. Residents are warned to avoid using wet electrical devices as they pose significant risks.
Additionally, for lighting needs during power outages, it is recommended to use flashlights instead of candles. If candles must be used, it is critical never to leave them unattended to prevent potential fire hazards.
Residents should also exercise caution when approaching damaged buildings since storms can compromise the structural integrity, making them unsafe. It is advisable to avoid entering any potentially weakened structures.
Lastly, the county warns about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Equipment such as gas or coal-burning grills, generators, and heaters should not be used indoors, including basements and garages. To prevent harm, these should be kept outdoors at a minimum distance of 20 feet from windows, doors, or walls.
