Historic Lighthouse up for sale in Delaware

TOWNSEND, Del. — The federal government has listed the Reedy Island Rear Range Lighthouse for sale, offering a rare opportunity to own a piece of maritime history in New Castle County.

The property, located in Townsend, consists of approximately 0.08 acres and features a 134-foot cast-iron skeleton lighthouse. Built in 1910, the tower stands on octagonal poured-concrete pads and tapers from a 35-foot square base to a 10-foot top. The site is accessible by land via an easement across an adjacent property to Taylor’s Bridge Road.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is handling the sale, with realty specialist Aaron Hoke listed as the point of contact. The agency has assigned control number DE-0467-AB to the property.

Interested buyers can review the property’s notice of availability document, which outlines key details of the sale. The lighthouse, once a navigational aid, is now being offered to private owners as part of the government’s effort to transfer surplus real estate.

The sale presents a unique chance to own a historic lighthouse, though potential buyers should be prepared for preservation requirements associated with such properties.
