Injured New York State trooper begins rehab after being struck by impaired driver

November 26, 2024

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State Trooper Nicholas Abbondola has been discharged from Albany Medical Center and moved to a rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery after being struck by an allegedly impaired driver earlier this month. Law enforcement officers gathered outside the hospital Tuesday in a show of support for the trooper as he left.

Trooper Abbondola was seriously injured on November 2, 2024, while on duty. The New York State Police described his road to recovery as “long,” but praised his determination and resilience. “Nick’s unwavering determination to serve, even in the face of adversity, is truly inspiring,” the department said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The community and law enforcement organizations across New York have rallied behind Abbondola and his family. The Police Benevolent Association of New York State Troopers, the Signal 30 Benefit Fund, the New York State Police Investigators Association, and the American Association of State Troopers Inc. were specifically recognized for their ongoing contributions and support.

The outpouring of encouragement has come not only from New York but from across the nation, with residents and organizations offering assistance and well wishes. Trooper Abbondola’s injuries and subsequent hospitalization highlighted the dangers law enforcement officers face daily.

As Trooper Abbondola begins rehabilitation, colleagues and community members remain committed to supporting him every step of the way.
