Investigation Underway After Structure Fire at Cumberland Trash Facility

Cumberland, MD — A fire broke out at a trash separation facility owned by Waste Management on Hazmat Drive, prompting an investigation.

On May 14, at 11:25 a.m., employees discovered a fire in a trash pile inside the 100ft by 80ft metal-sided facility at 13810 Hazmat Drive. The fire, caused accidentally during trash separation with an excavator, ignited materials within the debris. Employees attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers but were unsuccessful.

The Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department responded with 40 firefighters and two alarms. The fire was controlled in 10 minutes. There were no injuries or deaths reported, and the estimated structural loss is $1,000.
