BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A Brooklyn man was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty in connection with a daylight shooting that injured a 16-year-old girl near a high school in Midwood, officials said Tuesday.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Javan Johnson, 22, of Flatbush, received the sentence from Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Joanne Quinones. Johnson pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted assault on September 5, following the October 6, 2023, shooting near Edward R. Murrow High School.
According to the district attorney, Johnson fired at least 10 shots at a rival at approximately 12 p.m. near East 16th Street and Avenue M. The shots missed the intended target and struck a 16-year-old girl in the right ankle as she walked home from school.
“This defendant’s unlawful decision to open fire near a school not only injured an innocent 16-year-old girl but shattered the sense of safety that every student, parent, and community member deserves,” Gonzalez said in a statement.
The teenager, who was transported to a local hospital, suffered substantial bleeding and a fractured foot, authorities said. Johnson was arrested hours after the shooting, during which he handed the gun to another individual before fleeing. Along with his prison sentence, he was given five years of post-release supervision.
