Kent County Construction Worker Wins $50,000 on Triple Red 777s Scratch-Off Ticket

A Kent County man spotted an unusual number of sevens on his Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket and walked away with a $50,000 prize.

A Kent County construction worker is celebrating a $50,000 Maryland Lottery win after a routine stop for breakfast led to a lucky scratch-off purchase. The longtime player said he often wonders, “What if?” when buying tickets, and recently found himself living out that possibility.

Key Points

• A Kent County man won $50,000 playing a Triple Red 777s scratch-off ticket.

• The winning ticket was purchased at a Wawa in Grasonville.

• The winner plans to pay bills and possibly take a vacation.

The winner claimed his prize June 3 at Maryland Lottery headquarters after purchasing a $20 Triple Red 777s scratch-off ticket. Although he was hoping for one of the game’s $1 million top prizes, he said he was thrilled to discover he had won $50,000 instead.

“I play for the novelty of it. What if…,” the winner told lottery officials while claiming the prize.

Breakfast Stop Leads to Big Win

The construction worker said he typically buys two lottery tickets about once a week. During an unusual breakfast stop at the Wawa convenience store on Hissey Road in Grasonville, he purchased two Triple Red 777s tickets.

After scratching the tickets, something immediately caught his attention.

“Wait a minute. There’s too many sevens,” he recalled saying after noticing an unusually high number of winning symbols on the ticket.

Winning Ticket Packed With Sevens

According to the Maryland Lottery, the winning ticket contained sevens in 24 of its 30 play spots, including one red 7. Under the game’s rules, players win the amount shown in each square containing a 7, while red 7s double the prize amount.

The red 7 revealed a $10,000 prize, helping push the ticket’s total value to $50,000.

Keeping Plans Simple

Despite the sizable payout, the winner said he has modest plans for the money. He told lottery officials he intends to pay a few bills and may use some of the winnings for a vacation.

The winning ticket was sold at the Wawa convenience store located at 101 Hissey Road in Grasonville.
