Long Branch Man Extradited for Infant Assault Charges

FREEHOLD, NJ – Byron M. Jovel-Barquero, a Long Branch resident accused of seriously injuring his infant daughter and physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend, has been extradited to New Jersey from Ohio, announced Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.

Jovel-Barquero, 20, faces charges of second-degree Aggravated Assault, second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Simple Assault, a disorderly persons offense.

The investigation, conducted by the MCPO Special Victims Bureau and Long Branch Police Department, revealed that Jovel-Barquero’s physical assault on his ex-girlfriend also resulted in serious injuries to her 4-month-old child, leading to hospitalization.

U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Jovel-Barquero in Toledo, Ohio, on September 6. He was extradited to New Jersey last week and is currently held in Monmouth County Correctional Institution pending court proceedings. The State has filed a motion to keep him detained as the case advances.

MCPO Assistant Prosecutor Stephanie Dugan of the Special Victims Bureau is prosecuting the case. Information about Jovel-Barquero’s legal representation is not available at this time.
