QUEENS, N.Y. — A Manhattan man was convicted on Friday for the 2010 murder of a transgender woman in her Glendale apartment, following a two-week jury trial in Queens Supreme Court.
Rasheen Everett, 43, was found guilty of second-degree murder, second-degree burglary, and tampering with physical evidence in the killing of Amanda Gonzalez Andujar, 29, who was strangled in her home on March 27, 2010. Everett attempted to conceal the crime by pouring bleach over the victim’s body before stealing her belongings, according to trial records.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement, “We are determined to seek justice for the victims and their loved ones, no matter how much time passes.” She noted that her office successfully rebuilt the case against Everett after his original 2013 conviction was reversed in 2021 due to a judicial error.
Surveillance footage captured Everett leaving Andujar’s apartment alone with two bags, which contained several of her personal items, including a camera, laptop, and cell phone. Andujar’s body was discovered three days later by family members. The medical examiner confirmed her cause of death as neck compression.
Everett was arrested in Las Vegas on April 9, 2010. His DNA was found under the victim’s fingernails, further linking him to the crime. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison when sentenced on November 11.
