ABSECON, N.J. — A hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning in Absecon left a 25-year-old man with life-threatening injuries and killed his dog, police said.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight at the intersection of Highland Boulevard and Marlborough Avenue, where Syed Hoque, of Absecon, and his dog were struck by a vehicle. Hoque was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, while his dog died at the scene.

The driver fled but was later apprehended after officers located a vehicle matching the description provided by a passing motorist who called 911. Police arrested Byron A. Jones, 52, of Mays Landing, following a motor vehicle stop.

The crash remains under investigation by the Absecon Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit in collaboration with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities are seeking additional witnesses or information regarding the incident and encourage the public to contact them.

Traffic in the area was disrupted for approximately four hours as police conducted their investigation.
