BRONX, N.Y. — A Manhattan man was sentenced to seven years in prison for hitting a pedestrian with a stolen truck, leaving the victim with severe injuries, including broken bones and severed fingers, according to Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark.
Carl Jenkins, 61, of East 30th Street, pleaded guilty in October to second-degree assault and leaving the scene of an incident without reporting. He was sentenced on Tuesday by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Shari Michaels to seven years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.
The incident occurred on April 22, 2022, when Jenkins stole a 2002 Mitsubishi flatbed truck parked outside a lumber yard on White Plains Road. Surveillance footage captured Jenkins entering the truck, which had been left with the keys inside, and later driving recklessly down White Plains Road.
Jenkins struck a 49-year-old pedestrian, crushing him against another vehicle before fleeing the scene. The victim sustained extensive injuries, including a punctured lung, multiple broken bones, internal bleeding, broken teeth, and two severed fingers. Titanium plates and screws were surgically implanted to repair his ribs and forearm.
“The defendant’s reckless actions have now been answered with a substantial prison sentence,” District Attorney Clark said, highlighting the long-term pain and disability caused by the incident.
