Marine Veteran Sentenced in Jan. 6 Capitol Riot Case

WASHINGTON, D.C. — John George Todd III, a Missouri resident and U.S. Marine veteran, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell delivered the sentence in a Washington, D.C., courtroom, expressing strong disapproval of Todd’s actions and attitude.

During the proceedings, Judge Howell criticized Todd for showing no remorse for his actions, which included carrying a fiberglass pole with a flag attached at the Capitol. She remarked, “This is not a patriot. This is not conduct becoming of a Marine.” The sentence imposed is significantly less than the 12 years and seven months initially sought by federal prosecutors.

Todd, 34, did not make any statements during his sentencing, choosing not to address the court. The case highlights ongoing legal repercussions for those involved in the violent events of January 6.
