Maryland Correctional Officer Pleads Guilty to Misconduct in Inappropriate Relationship Case

July 23, 2024

BALTIMORE, MD — Attorney General Anthony G. Brown has announced the guilty plea of Ajee Xavier Myers, a Correctional Dietary Officer at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup, for misconduct in office. The plea comes after an investigation into Myers’ inappropriate relationship with an incarcerated individual.

Myers, who had been employed for three years, entered her plea on July 16, 2024, before Judge Donna M. Schaeffer in the Circuit Court of Maryland for Anne Arundel County. She received a two-year suspended sentence and three years of probation and agreed to resign from her position.

The case surfaced in September 2023 when the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services’ Intelligence and Investigative Division was alerted to the relationship. Investigations revealed that Myers had engaged in misconduct by granting unauthorized privileges to the incarcerated individual, failing to report their rule violations, and using her own money to fund the individual’s commissary account. Notably, she communicated with the individual over 800 times in three months using the facility’s recorded phone system.

Further investigations exposed Myers’ attempts to isolate and interrogate another incarcerated person, whom she saw as a romantic rival, demanding information about their relationship with her victim. Myers’ actions were uncovered through diligent work by the state’s investigative teams, emphasizing the seriousness with which Maryland treats allegations of staff misconduct.

DPSCS Secretary Carolyn Scruggs commented on the importance of maintaining integrity within the correctional system and thanked both the investigative team and the Office of the Attorney General for their roles in bringing the case to a successful conclusion. The efforts underline Maryland’s commitment to upholding justice and ensuring the safety of its correctional facilities.
