Grocery run turns into $49K jackpot win for Maryland lottery player
CROFTON, MD — A routine grocery trip turned into a $49,223 payday for an Anne Arundel County man who hit a FAST PLAY progressive jackpot.
The Odenton resident stopped at a Giant store in Crofton intending to buy Mega Millions and Powerball tickets but decided on a whim to also try a FAST PLAY game.
That extra ticket — a $5 Chili Pepper Payout — turned out to be the jackpot winner.
The player initially didn’t realize he had won until scanning the ticket, which prompted him to take a closer look and confirm the prize amount.
Lottery officials said the progressive jackpot reset to $40,000 after the winning ticket was sold.
The winner later claimed the prize and plans to put the money into savings for now.
The Giant store that sold the ticket will receive a $492.23 bonus, equal to 1% of the prize.
