SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Montgomery County Department of Police issued a statement addressing recent reports of suspicious drone activity in Maryland and nearby states, clarifying that no such incidents are currently under investigation within the county.
The department reminded residents of its active Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) program, which deploys drones for operational purposes, including emergency responses and as part of the Drone as First Responder (DFR) initiative. This program operates drones from three key locations: Downtown Silver Spring, Downtown Wheaton Glenmont, and Gaithersburg.
“Drones may also be deployed during specific service calls, such as searches for missing persons,” the department stated, noting that these flights typically occur alongside a noticeable police presence on the ground.
A significant portion of Montgomery County falls within the federally regulated Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ), a 15-mile radius centered on Washington, D.C. The FRZ limits drone flights within its boundaries, but the public may still observe some UAS flights in compliance with the regulations, as well as fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.
The statement sought to reassure residents while raising awareness of the department’s authorized drone operations, emphasizing their use in enhancing public safety efforts across the county.
