NEW CREEK, WV – This morning, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command (MSPAC) successfully carried out a critical rescue operation for an injured logger in Grant County, West Virginia. The incident occurred when the logger suffered a fall from a tree limb, necessitating urgent medical attention.
The rescue was executed by Trooper 5, a crew stationed in Cumberland, Maryland, who performed a precise hoist operation. Due to the severe nature of the logger’s injuries and the challenging terrain, ground personnel from Grant County called for aerial support to expedite the extraction.
Using an AgustaWestland AW-139 helicopter, pilots maneuvered above a logging trail within a dense forest, enabling a Trooper/Paramedic to be lowered directly to the accident site. After securing the injured logger, he was airlifted to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital Emergency Room in Morgantown, West Virginia, for immediate treatment.
Since its establishment in 1970, MSPAC has maintained a fleet of 10 AW139 helicopters, operating out of seven bases across Maryland. These aircraft are crucial in supporting a wide range of missions including medevac services, law enforcement, search and rescue, homeland security, and disaster assessment. The effectiveness of these missions is largely attributed to the collaborative efforts of various local and national agencies including fire, rescue, EMS, law enforcement, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Park Police.
