Massive sinkhole swallows dump truck as New Jersey town declares state of emergency

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ – A routine repair operation turned into a crisis Tuesday afternoon when a dump truck was partially swallowed by a sudden sinkhole at the intersection of Summit Avenue and Lewis Street, an area already under closure due to prior subsurface instability.

The collapse occurred around 12:58 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response and leading officials to declare a local state of emergency.

Lehigh Valley News shared images of the incident on Facebook.

Authorities said the truck was part of an authorized repair crew working inside the closed-off area when the ground beneath it gave way. The operator escaped injury, and no other vehicles or pedestrians were affected. The site remains sealed off as engineers assess the damage and evaluate the underlying cause of the collapse.

The Phillipsburg Police, Fire Department, and other first responders rushed to the scene to secure the area and ensure public safety. Summit Avenue will stay closed between Fillmore Street and Chambers Street until experts determine the ground is stable enough for traffic. Officials are urging motorists to avoid the area and follow posted detours.

Town officials said the state of local emergency declaration enables access to additional resources, allowing the municipality to expedite structural assessments, deploy utility crews, and initiate necessary road and utility repairs more efficiently. “This is a proactive step,” the town said in a statement, “intended to strengthen our ability to address the situation quickly and safely.”

Utility provider Aqua New Jersey confirmed that water service disruptions occurred following the collapse, but most homes have since regained service. Residents may temporarily notice discolored water and low pressure while the system stabilizes. Officials emphasized that the water remains safe to drink.

Contracted geotechnical and engineering experts are working with town departments to analyze the affected infrastructure and determine whether underground water flow or soil instability contributed to the collapse. The town’s goal is to prevent further roadway failures and restore the area safely to normal use.

Community urged to stay clear of closed areas

Residents are being reminded to stay away from the affected zone and obey all closure signs and detours. The town said further updates will be provided through official channels, including its website and social media pages.

The declaration marks the latest in a string of infrastructure concerns tied to the Summit Avenue corridor, which has experienced recurring sinkhole issues in recent months. Officials continue to monitor nearby areas for any signs of ground movement.
