FREEHOLD, N.J. — A Matawan resident has pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a crash that killed a pedestrian in Aberdeen Township, authorities announced.
Sonia N. Gomez, 65, entered a guilty plea on June 27 to one count of second-degree leaving the scene of a motor vehicle fatality. Prosecutors said Gomez struck 58-year-old Judith Fox-Hernandez with her vehicle and failed to stop or report the incident.
The collision occurred on the evening of September 4 at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 2nd Street. When Aberdeen Township Police arrived at the scene, they found Fox-Hernandez in the roadway with serious injuries. She was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she died weeks later on September 29.
The investigation, led by the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, the Major Crimes Bureau, and Aberdeen police, identified Gomez as the driver of a 2015 Honda Pilot involved in the crash. Authorities confirmed she left the scene and did not contact law enforcement.
“Chief Matthew Lloyd extends his sincere gratitude to the dedicated officers of all three divisions of the Aberdeen Township Police Department,” the department said in a statement, commending the work that led to Gomez’s arrest.
Gomez faces up to three years in state prison when she is sentenced on August 14.
