Mayor reassures community after false weapon scares at West Orange High School

WEST ORANGE, N.J. – Mayor Susan McCartney issued a public statement Monday addressing two recent security incidents at West Orange High School that prompted lockdown and shelter-in-place procedures, emphasizing that no weapons were ever found on school grounds and that students and staff remained safe throughout both events.

The mayor confirmed that the facts, as verified by Principal Oscar Guerrero and the West Orange Police Department, showed no firearms or weapons were discovered on any person, inside the building, or anywhere on campus. The incidents, which occurred within a two-week span, caused understandable concern among parents and students but were handled according to established safety protocols coordinated between school administrators, school resource officers, and local police.

McCartney’s message also focused on the dangers of misinformation, citing social media rumors and doctored or AI-generated images that circulated in the wake of the incidents. She urged residents to rely only on official communications from the school district or law enforcement, noting that unverified claims only deepen community anxiety.

Recognizing the emotional toll on students and staff, the mayor commended the school district for providing counseling and mental health support services. She stressed that maintaining emotional well-being is equally important as ensuring physical safety in times of crisis.

Addressing parent concerns about communication during emergencies, McCartney explained that there are moments when intercoms and phone systems must be restricted to allow first responders to act swiftly and without interference. She assured families that their feedback has been heard and that the township, police, and school district are committed to reviewing and strengthening emergency communication and preparedness protocols.

The mayor concluded by expressing gratitude to Principal Guerrero, Superintendent Hayden Moore, the West Orange Police Department, and school staff for their professionalism and dedication to student safety.

Mayor Susan McCartney reaffirmed that the safety and well-being of West Orange students remains the township’s top priority.
