Mayor Rodrick Backs Saint Joseph’s Application for Transitional Housing Serving Homeless Women with Children

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Mayor Daniel T. Rodrick announced his support for St. Joseph’s Parish as it seeks continued approval for its long-standing program offering temporary housing for women and children. For 29 years, the site on Lexington has quietly provided safe, short-term housing to women with children and pregnant women in need.

The current application is required only because of recent changes in state law, not because of any change in the program itself.

Mayor Rodrick highlighted the small-scale nature of the program, which serves no more than two families at a time. “Unlike other proposals that would have created large shelters—primarily for young men, most of whom are drug addicted and mentally ill—this approach ensures personalized, stable support in a family-like setting, helping women and children regain their footing before moving on to permanent housing,” he said. “For nearly three decades, this modest but vital effort has kept local mothers and children safe during their most vulnerable moments.”

The Mayor extended his gratitude to Father Scott and Saint Joseph’s Parish. “Father Scott’s dedication to service has made a real difference in Toms River. His commitment, compassion, and steady leadership have improved countless lives in our community, and we are deeply thankful for his ongoing work.”

The Mayor emphasized that the Zoning Board—not his office—will make the final decision on the application, and noted that the board is primarily comprised of members appointed by the prior administration.

“This is about strengthening families and supporting our neighbors,” Rodrick concluded. “When we help those in need, we build a stronger, more caring Toms River.”
