WOODBURY, NJ — The Woodbury City Police Department has welcomed its newest member, a two-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever named Scooby, who will serve as the department’s Community Resource Canine.
Scooby was trained by The Hero Academy, a nonprofit that provides service and facility dogs to veterans, first responders, and communities. The organization donated Scooby to the police department at no cost. Sgt. Beckett completed training with Scooby at the academy, forming a working partnership designed to support both the department and the public.
As a department facility dog, Scooby will accompany Sgt. Beckett daily, providing emotional support and stress relief to officers and staff. The department says his presence is intended to foster well-being and a more supportive work environment.
Scooby will also play a public-facing role in community engagement. Described as calm and friendly, he will attend local events in Woodbury and Woodbury Heights to interact with residents and offer comfort.
Crisis response role and community outreach
In addition to his duties within the department, Scooby is designated as a Crisis Response Canine. In this capacity, he will provide comfort and emotional relief during crises, helping individuals affected by trauma, disaster, or grief feel more secure and connected to support systems.
According to the department, Scooby’s presence during emergencies can help reduce anxiety and serve as a bridge between the public and mental health resources.
The Woodbury City Police Department says Scooby’s introduction reflects a continued commitment to officer wellness and community-focused policing strategies.
