TOMS RIVER, N.J. — An illegal immigrant held in Ocean County Jail faces an uncertain future after county commissioners announced they will no longer comply with a directive from Gov. Phil Murphy barring cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Teofelo Reyes Lima, who has been in custody since January 7, is subject to a detainer issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), records show. He is being held without bail on charges including criminal sexual contact, endangering the welfare of a child, and attempted criminal conduct.

Ocean County officials recently reversed their policy on ICE detainers, signaling a shift in enforcement that could impact Reyes Lima’s case. The decision comes amid broader debates over local cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

His bond was previously set at $1,500 on a separate hindering prosecution charge, but that case was later dismissed. The projected release date for Reyes Lima remains undetermined, and ICE has not commented on whether removal proceedings are planned.

Prior to the decision, Ocean County officials followed New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s non-cooperation directive with federal officials.
