Pickup and SUV collided nearly head-on along Centerville Turnpike

CHESAPEAKE, VA — A Wednesday morning drive on Centerville Turnpike ended in a nearly head-on collision that seriously injured two drivers and forced the closure of a stretch of the Chesapeake roadway while crews cleared the crash scene.

Chesapeake Police and Fire departments responded to the 100 block of Centerville Turnpike S. at approximately 9:15 a.m.

Police said a pickup truck was traveling northbound while a small SUV was traveling southbound when the vehicles collided nearly head-on near the center of the roadway.

The adult woman driving the SUV suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The adult man driving the pickup truck was also seriously injured and taken to a local hospital.

Police did not release the identities of either driver or provide further information about their conditions.

Centerville Turnpike S. was closed between Butts Station Road and Mount Pleasant Road while crews removed debris and completed cleanup.

Police did not provide an estimated reopening time in the announcement.

Investigators have not said what caused the vehicles to collide near the center of the road.

The crash remains under investigation.
