Murphy Raises U.S. Flags in New Jersey After Trump Executive Order

TRENTON, N.J. — Governor Phil Murphy has ordered U.S. and New Jersey flags to be raised to full-staff on January 20, 2025, following a directive issued by President Donald J. Trump after his inauguration.

President Trump, sworn into office earlier in the day, issued a proclamation directing the raising of the U.S. flag for the remainder of Inauguration Day. In response, Governor Murphy signed Executive Order No. 379, ensuring New Jersey’s compliance with the directive.

The flags had been lowered to half-staff on December 31, 2024, in accordance with a proclamation from former President Joe Biden honoring former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100.

Governor Murphy confirmed that flags would return to half-staff beginning January 21, 2025, and remain lowered until sunset on January 28, 2025, consistent with President Biden’s proclamation and Executive Order No. 373.

The order was issued shortly after 5 pm.
