Department identifies officers involved and confirms no arrests or citations were made during disputed interaction
TOLEDO, Ohio — Questions surrounding a police encounter with juveniles in Toledo have prompted the release of body-worn camera footage as an internal investigation continues into the actions and conduct of the officers involved.
The Toledo Police Department announced Friday that it has released body-worn camera footage connected to an incident that is currently under internal review.
According to the department, the encounter occurred on May 20 at approximately 7:28 p.m. in the area of the 2000 block of Sylvan Avenue.
Police said officers initially observed juveniles crossing the street outside of a designated crosswalk, leading to the interaction.
The entire encounter was documented on police body-worn cameras.
Officials confirmed that no arrests were made, no citations were issued, and no police report was generated in connection with the incident.
The department also publicly identified the officers involved in the encounter.
According to Toledo Police, Officer Zachary Cairl, who was hired in November 2016, and Officer Chase Baney, who was hired in October 2021, were the officers involved.
Police emphasized that the internal investigation remains active and ongoing.
Department officials said investigators are conducting a full review of the incident, including examining the actions and conduct of the officers involved.
The department noted that the release of the body-worn camera footage should not be interpreted as a final determination regarding the investigation.
In a statement accompanying the release, Toledo Police Chief Michael Troendle addressed public concerns about the incident.
“We understand that many in the community have questions and concerns regarding this incident. Releasing the body-worn camera footage is part of the department’s commitment to transparency while the investigation continues,” Troendle said.
