WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, N.J. — The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred early Thursday in Middlesex County, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old man identified as Aamir Allen of Carteret.
According to a statement released by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability, the incident began around 1:00 a.m. when Woodbridge police responded to a 911 call about a domestic dispute at a home on East Tappen Street in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township.
Allen reportedly left the residence on foot and walked to a nearby convenience store along Port Reading Avenue. There, he was encountered by police while carrying a baseball bat. During the encounter outside the store, Woodbridge Police Sergeant Marco Bruno discharged his firearm, striking Allen.
Allen was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at approximately 1:40 a.m. and later died from his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 9:21 a.m.
Grand jury review required under state law
The Attorney General’s Office is required by state law to investigate all deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement officers acting in an official capacity. The statute mandates that the findings of the investigation be presented to a grand jury to determine whether any charges are warranted.
