New Jersey Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill Officially Resigns

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill has officially resigned her seat in Congress, submitting letters of resignation Tuesday to both New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Her resignation becomes effective at 11:59 p.m. on November 20.

Sherrill, who has represented New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District since 2019, will assume office as the state’s 57th governor after winning the November election.

“It has been an honor to serve the residents of the 11th Congressional District,” Sherrill wrote in her letter to Murphy. “Public service is a public trust. I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of the 11th District and all New Jerseyans as Governor next year.”

In her correspondence with Speaker Johnson, Sherrill confirmed that she had enclosed her formal resignation to the governor and expressed gratitude for her years in Congress.

“I look forward to serving them, and all residents of New Jersey, as Governor over the next four years,” she wrote.

During her tenure in the House, Sherrill served on the Armed Services Committee and the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party. She highlighted work on federal flood mitigation, veterans’ services, and infrastructure projects in her farewell note.

The timing of her resignation triggers a special election process for her congressional seat under New Jersey law.
