MONROE TWP., N.J. — Three Monroe Township police officers pulled a man from a burning bedroom during a mental health crisis on May 17, despite threats of violence and visible flames inside the home, according to authorities.
Sergeant Justin Caruso and Officers Wesley Panckeri and Marc Kramer responded to a welfare check at a residence in Middlesex County. Upon arrival, they encountered a man in crisis who refused to cooperate and threatened to harm officers if they entered his room.
Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and maintained a cautious stance, using shields and Taser devices in case they needed to intervene. When the man stopped communicating and smoke began to emerge from the bedroom, officers decided to force entry.
Inside the room, officers found the man armed with a knife as the fire spread. Using a shield, they safely subdued him and removed him from the burning area before attempting to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher.
Emergency services assisted at the scene
The Monroe Township Fire Department and local EMS responded to assist with the fire and the medical needs of those involved. The subject was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. All three officers were also transported to the hospital and released the same day.
“This incident highlights the bravery, compassion, and professionalism of our officers,” said Chief Griffin Banos. “Despite the dangers they faced, they remained calm, made sound decisions under pressure, and ultimately saved a life.”
