New Jersey Cops Shoot Dogs, Each Other Attempting to Stop Mauling of 10-Year-Old Boy Inside Motel Room

SAYREVILLE, N.J. — A police shooting is under investigation in Middlesex County after officers intervened to stop two dogs from mauling a 10-year-old boy at a Sayreville motel on Monday afternoon, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.

The Sayreville Police Department responded to a 911 call placed by a family member staying at the Knights Inn in Sayreville around 11:20 a.m. The caller reported that their child was being attacked by their dogs in one of the motel rooms. Officers arrived to find the dogs actively attacking the child, prompting them to use firearms to end the attack.

In the course of the incident, a ricochet struck one of the responding officers, resulting in a superficial wound, officials said. Both the 10-year-old boy and the officer were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where they remain in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.

“The officers acted quickly to prevent further harm to the child,” Ciccone stated, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing. Details regarding the dogs’ breeds, the relationship between the family and the dogs, and the specifics of the attack were not immediately available.

Authorities are urging anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area to contact Detective Stephanie Redline of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3316.
