Trenton, NJ – In a rare display of bipartisan unity, State Senators Doug Steinhardt (R-23) and Brian Stack (D-33) announced Monday that they are co-sponsoring legislation to crack down on politically motivated violence by classifying such acts as hate crimes under New Jersey law.
The proposed bill would create enhanced penalties and mandatory minimum sentences for crimes tied to political motivations, ranging from assault and arson to manslaughter and murder. Lawmakers said the measure aims to protect both citizens and government officials from violence linked to political beliefs.
It is unclear where their fellow members of their respective parties will stand on the matter at this time.
Steinhardt said the legislation reflects the need for lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to address the issue head-on. “Working together is the only way forward, and it sends a crucial message that this isn’t a partisan issue,” he said. “Political violence hurts everyone, and it’s happening too often to too many people. We must act now to deter it and hold violent offenders accountable.”
Stack, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, pledged to push the measure through the legislative process. “Politically motivated violence is an attack on the foundation of our democracy,” Stack said. “No one in this country should live in fear for speaking their mind, and elected officials must be able to govern free from threats, harassment, or attempts to silence them. Enough is enough; this kind of behavior has no place in a free society.”
The legislation would also include provisions that presume criminal intent when acts of violence are carried out against public employees, appointees, or officials. Lawmakers said the measure is designed to ensure that political discourse remains protected while sending a clear signal that violence tied to politics will be met with swift and severe consequences.
If passed, the initiative would mark one of the toughest state-level crackdowns on political violence in the nation, positioning New Jersey as a model for balancing free expression with public safety.
