New Jersey Has Sued 120 Towns for Fighting Unfair Affordable Housing Mandates

TRENTON, N.J. – Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco (R-25) criticized the Murphy administration and Democratic leadership in response to lawsuits filed against nearly 160 municipalities over state-mandated high-density housing obligations.

“The Democrats’ misguided efforts have now opened up towns across New Jersey to lawsuits that will force them to spend taxpayer dollars on attorney fees to litigate every one of these cases—and there will be hundreds of them,” Bucco said.

The lawsuits stem from a law adopted last year, which aimed to streamline the process of assigning affordable housing obligations to municipalities. Instead, many towns are now facing legal battles after attempting to reduce their mandated housing quotas.

Bucco, a vocal critic of the policy, has introduced legislation to reform the way New Jersey determines municipal housing obligations. He has also called for bipartisan cooperation to address the state’s housing crisis.
