Trenton, NJ – New Jersey has officially joined forces with seven Northeastern states and New York City in a new regional health partnership aimed at strengthening science-based public health policy while pushing back against federal directives under the Trump administration’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The newly branded Northeast Public Health Collaborative includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York State, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and New York City. The group, which began informal coordination earlier this year, held its first in-person meeting in Rhode Island in August.
The coalition’s mission is to unify resources and expertise across state lines to better respond to emergencies, advance vaccination policies, expand laboratory services, and rebuild trust in public health. Officials say the partnership is designed to operate independently of federal political shifts, ensuring regional residents have access to science-driven guidance.
Working groups have already been formed to tackle issues such as pandemic readiness, infectious disease management, vaccine purchasing, epidemiology, and data analysis. Collaborative projects under discussion include preparing for the FIFA World Cup, which will feature three host cities in the region, and addressing chronic workforce shortages in the public health sector.
Leaders from across the region stressed the need for unity in the face of health misinformation. Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health Robbie Goldstein said, “Strong public health must stand high above ideology. Our region understands this, and we are moving forward, resolute, united, and guided by science.”
New Jersey Acting Health Commissioner Jeff Brown called the effort a “natural synergy,” pointing to the interconnectedness of populations across state lines and the need for coordinated readiness. “Whether it’s responding to a pandemic or preparing for a large-scale event such as the upcoming FIFA World Cup, working together helps keep our residents safe and healthy,” Brown said.
The collaborative emphasizes that while members will pursue shared objectives, each state and city retains autonomy to adapt policies to its own legal and demographic realities.
